You are what you share

"We're closer to this reality than most people imagine. We call this mode of sharing, using, and managing data "Personal Identity Management"

No two people are the same. Nor are you the same in every part of your life. Your professional life is different from your family life, and even your friends know you differently depending on how you met them and what you have in common. There are even times you want to remain entirely anonymous.
Managing these kinds of relationships is hard enough in the real world. Today, throughout most of the Internet and social networks, it is almost impossible to control what people know about you because everyone wants to put you in a “one-size-fits-all” box for their benefit, not yours. We change that by putting you back in control of how others see you digitally.

At the heart of your private, personal network is the ability to decide which parts of yourself to reveal when connecting with others. Currently, we don't even allow people to search for you on Personal. Just connecting with another person in our system requires that you know his or her email address in advance.
Identity management starts with four basic features:
When registering, you are asked to choose a unique username, which is how you will be known when using the system. We recommend an anonymous username as you have many other chances to share your true identity. When connecting with others, only your username, along with your avatar if you add one, will automatically be revealed.
This simple but important gem contains your actual name. If you decide to share it with someone in your network, you will be known to them by this name.
This gem allows you to share a nickname and an alternative avatar when connecting outside of Personal, or when publishing community gems.
We believe strongly in your right to remain anonymous when you choose. At present, we only support remaining anonymous when publishing community gems, but will be rolling out new anonymity features in the very near future.
