A new kind of company
An improved business model. We put people first, not companies.
We've grown used to sacrificing control of our data in exchange for modern conveniences. Our personal information is duplicated across the countless websites and services we use and enjoy. And yet, despite the fact that our data is everywhere, it’s not in a place where we can make the most of it.
At Personal, we wanted to find a way to allow people to own the master copy of their data. What’s more, we wanted them to have the freedom to share this information with those they trust. That’s why we’ve created a new standard of information ownership: The data that you store in Personal is yours. And even when you share that data with someone else, it’s still yours.
Identity, preferences and behavior online represent valuable information for businesses looking to sell products and services, and this “big” data is rapidly becoming a commodity. In fact, companies are pocketing billions of dollars each year aggregating and selling personal data to advertisers. All of those “free services” don't seem quite so free when you see things in this light, do they?
At Personal, we believe that you should always have full ownership and control over your data. Not only that, but we want to help you understand that even “small” data – the data specific to your life – has incredible value. We've been spreading the word that “small data is the new oil".
Even though we have a distinguished track record as a management team, and a stellar group of investors, we know trust is earned, not given. We make it easy for you to take your data – and delete all copies – should you ever decide to leave. We passionately believe you have to give people the tools to leave, in order to earn their trust to stay.
In years to come, people will look back and wonder how companies ever thought they could control or own all of our personal data. The current system is ineffective: according to the Direct Marketing Association, over 97% of online advertising fails to reach the right person at the right time. Let’s change that by letting people take back control of their data and by giving companies a better way to connect with consumers.
Ultimately, our plan is to build a user-centric marketplace with Personal as your data broker, matching your preferences and needs with relevant offers from businesses. This far more efficient marketplace can easily add up to thousands of dollars annually as people realize the full value of their data, time and purchases.
"Personal data is an asset and should be explicitly controlled by the owner. A whole new industry will emerge to provide people with the tools to effectively price their data."
